Zomba Mental Hospital Strengthens Risk Management Through International Partnership

Zomba Mental Hospital continues to demonstrate its commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and strong partnerships as it advances its position as a 4-star institution. Today marked a deeply emotional and meaningful moment as the hospital bid farewell to its valued partners from Aberdeen in the United Kingdom.

Through the Risk Management Mentorship Program, the hospital had the privilege of hosting Lorna and Andrea, who worked closely with staff to strengthen capacity in risk management. Their training focused on equipping staff with practical skills to protect themselves and respond effectively to various risks within the hospital environment. Their dedication, professionalism, and passion for improving healthcare systems have left a lasting impact on the team.

This partnership extends beyond training. During a previous visit, the team from Aberdeen mobilized support and successfully raised approximately MK5.9 million to further assist the hospital. Through this effort, they donated 20 walkie talkies with full accessories, including extensions, chargers, and spare batteries.

These communication devices have a coverage radius of about 7 kilometers and are expected to significantly improve coordination across wards and departments. They will play a crucial role in responding to incidents, managing patient abscondments, and strengthening overall communication systems. In addition, they will enhance the ability of PBX operators to report abnormalities observed on CCTV in real time, contributing to a safer and more responsive hospital environment.

The day’s event combined both a formal handover ceremony and a heartfelt farewell. As a token of appreciation and to warmly welcome them as part of the Zomba Mental Hospital family, the Risk Management Committee presented Lorna and Andrea with beautiful Malawian wraps, symbolizing cultural appreciation and lasting friendship.
